Community Leader Spotlight: BRO.RODERICK MAUL

Bro. Roderick Maul came to Restoration Mission at the age of 7, along with 6 of his 8 siblings.  They all became members of the church, and participants in the  Dream Garden After-School Tutoring and Summer Camp Program. After witnessing a tragedy involving his 5-year-old brother, Roderick was emotionally and behaviorally affected, causing him to "act out."   Pashion Lewis, Executive Director of Dream Garden, Inc., recognized that Roderick needed professional help, so she sought out counseling services which fortunately put him back "on the right track."

Roderick went on to finish elementary and middle school at Booker T. Washington, and high school at A. H. Parker High.  In May of 2018, Roderick received his Baccalaureate degree from Miles College. While in college, Roderick suffered the loss of his father, his 2 grandmothers, and 2 aunts.

Roderick was selected to receive a full scholarship in order to obtain his master’s degree, and has been accepted into the Advanced Standing Masters Program at Western Kentucky University (WKU).

He currently serves as the Vice-President Representative for the class.    Roderick was also awarded a graduate-assistant job in WKU's Intercultural Student Engagement Center, where he will work to assist undergraduate students.  His role will also include helping with student retention rates; and helping assist students with jobs and furthering their education. Additionally, Roderick will spend this semester traveling to historically-black colleges and universities (HBCU's), speaking with undergraduate students about furthering their education at WKU.

Upon completion of the Master's program, Roderick will be awarded with a Diversity Certificate for his role in that department.  He will go on to begin his internship at Necco, Inc., a child adoption agency, helping assist with family therapy, counseling, and case management.

If interested, Roderick has been offered the opportunity to study abroad in Africa (Summer 2019) on a full-ride scholarship.  At the conclusion of the international studies program, he has been offered the opportunity to continue his education in the Doctorate program on a minority full scholarship.

“I look forward to sharing my experience with the campers and staff of Dream Garden, Inc. once I graduate May of 2019 with my Master’s in social work.” - Bro. Roderick Maul
